Don’t overlook potential.
As leaders, we of course need our team members to be good at doing the work we have for them right now. But make sure you don’t just pigeonhole people with the assumption that the current projects are the only metric, especially when thinking strategically into the coming years. Watch for where they might have untapped potential. Are they a team-builder? A communicator? A sales-person? A designer? Someone who can create processes? A crisis-leader? A mentor or coach? Do they have potential to become a subject-matter expert? Are they a trouble-shooter? Do they have artistic skills? Are they excellent at quality-control?
Try to help all of your people find a path to the success and fulfillment that THEY want in your organization. Unleash that potential.
