“The people you surround yourself with have the tendency to break you or make you.”
Too often, we hire people based on their resumes. But we let people go for interpersonal reasons—they don’t “work and play well with others” or they “have a bad attitude” or “they are not motivated to do good work.”
Use the training and experience listed in the resume as a “first cut”—obviously, your team needs to include people with specific skills, training, and competencies. But use the interview process to determine if they are a good “fit” for your team, and for their role in that team. It’s a lot easier to get a smart and motivated team-player additional technical training than it is to deal with a competent person who no one wants to work with.
