As leaders, we can set much of the tone for our team.
Ideally, we want our people to have the attitude of “I get to go to work today!”
Too often, though, they have the attitude that “I have to go to work today.”
Changing this mindset is on US, not them. Make their work experience one that feels fulfilling, validating, and rewarding. Don’t wait until performance reviews to give them positive feedback. Discuss their professional aspirations and give them opportunities to grow skills and experience that will lead them to those goals. Mentor them. Make the workplace pleasant and productive—ask your people about the environments they prefer for good focus and comfort, and adjust lighting, seating, and layout options to maximize them. Respect work/life balance, and encourage your people to leave work at work and recharge BEFORE they hit burnout.
Give them what they need to thrive—not just survive—in your workplace.
