One of the best things a leader can do is give their team a sense of purpose and fulfillment from their work.
Give positive feedback for accomplishments and good efforts. Point them in the directions in which they can use and grow their competencies, and then praise them some more when they do.
Compensate your people fairly. It’s easier for people to appreciate their workplace when they don’t have the nagging suspicion that it is short-changing or under-valuing them.
Grow mutual respect by listening when they speak. Ask them where they see the opportunities for both their individual development, as well as the development of the team and the firm. Partner with them in that growth.
Share your vision for the success of the team and the purpose that your work serves.
And have fun in the workplace! Celebrate milestones and accomplishments.
