The Jennings Group started teaching our leadership courses a few decades ago because people with strong technical skills were being promoted into roles where they had to manage and lead people. And no one had ever taught them how to do that.
If you are trying to do something like this but don’t know how, we can help! We created a course that teaches leadership as a practical skillset. And we teach it without a lot of the “warm-and-fuzzy” stuff, because a lot of our participants are engineers and “engineers don’t do trust-falls.”
As leaders, we may have learned our leadership skills as we went. Or we may have cobbled together a leadership style held together with bailing wire and duct tape, but it seems to be holding for now. If you see the potential of a “rising star” in your firm and you want to set that person up for success as they come up in the organization, send them to leadership training. It doesn’t have to be with us (although I truly believe ours is the best), but they need to learn how to deal with people (effective communication, leading change, coaching and mentoring) of they are going to take on a greater role. Invest in their future success, as well as the success of your company.
