When we face a problem, many people look for ways to “get back to normal.”
However, that is not always possible, and when it is possible, it might not be desirable.
When faced with a problem, consider how you and your team might be able to make the outcome even better than “how it was before.” Here’s an example: when a huge tree crushed a large part of the back half of my house a few years ago, the insurance company covered the costs to bring it back to exactly how it was before the tree. But for the same costs, we decided to make some changes in room layout, window placement, etc. The repaired house is now even better than it was before the tree hit it, with more usable spaces and improved energy efficiency.
I did not want to have a huge tree mess up my house. But when it did, we had an opportunity to make things better than how they were. Approach challenges in your life and work with the mindset of “when this is all over, how can we have the best outcome for our team?” and you can use setbacks as springboards for progress.
