Today is a good day to mentor.
You don’t need to make a big deal out of it. Take your mentee to lunch and ask about their goals. Schedule a check-in for a work update, and then ask your team member how the work they are doing might fit into their larger plans (as experience that they can build on to reach their professional aspirations, etc.). Explain to your team why we do the work so that it fits into the larger project.
It can be even just a one-minute mentoring.
When you are mentoring, your focus is on helping your mentee figure out the Big Picture. Why do we do the things we do? What is the purpose of our efforts? How do we create meaning in our careers?
We all want our work to have purpose, to have meaning beyond the paycheck. Help your people find that meaning for themselves—it’s not one-size-fits-all. And help them find a path to greater success and fulfillment in their careers—show them what’s possible.
Today is a good day to mentor.
Tomorrow is a good day to mentor, too.
