As leaders, we are role models. We don’t have to be perfect (I keep finding these great leadership quotes from people who were, themselves, highly imperfect people), but we do have to make a consistent effort to be the best version of ourselves.

Figure out what matters to you, and then strive to be excellent on those metrics. Be open about your priorities. Do the right thing, even when it is not the easy thing. Hold yourself accountable.

We can ask people to live up to higher standards than we do. But they’ll see that hypocrisy, that “do as I say and not as I do,” and it will demotivate them and erode our leadership influence. Walk the walk.
