Resilience
A team member with resilience—sometimes called “strong will”—can be your greatest asset or biggest headache.
If you have one (or more) of these people on your team, you probably already know this. Strong-willed people do not react well to “slow down” or “let it go” messages. It’s more productive to channel their drive, rather than trying to block it.
Give them 2-3 acceptable options, rather than an open-ended “How do you want to do it?”
Point out the cliff: “You can do it that way, but when we add in the plumbing and electrical, you’ll have to re-do these portions.”
Let them loose when it counts. “We need to find a way to match the competition on this. I’m not sure it can be done, but if there’s a way, I bet you’re the person who can find it.”
