Make a conscious choice to recruit and promote people who look like society. Recruit from more than the “traditional” colleges. Mentor more than just that up-and-comer “who reminds me of myself as a young man.”
Yes, it’s the right thing to do in order to live up to the American ideals of opportunities for all people. But there is a completely selfish benefit, as well—diversity makes our companies better.
With a more diverse workforce, we can draw on more backgrounds and life experiences when working on our projects. We better meet the needs of our clients. We avoid “tone-deaf” public statements. We stand out as a contemporary company, not one stuck in a stale mindset of the past. We think of things that the competition doesn’t.
Diversity and inclusion are important as recruitment and promotion strategies. Make an extra effort to bring in people from traditionally under-represented groups. Companies that do this also see improved retention, as well.
