“Great leadership does not mean running away from reality. Sometimes the hard truths might just demoralize the company, but at other times sharing difficulties can inspire people to take action that will make the situation better.” ~ John Kotter
When things are going well, it’s easy to have a positive attitude. But if you have too much positivity when things are NOT going well, you look delusional, and few people want to follow a delusional leader.
But if you whine and wallow and vent to your people, you will erode their morale. Don’t do that.
It’s okay to acknowledge bad stuff, if it’s framed in a larger understanding. “Yeah, that was a gut-punch, but we’ve lost out on bids before, and we’ve always made it through. We can double-down on these other projects now and work to bring in another contract within the next 90 days, and then we’ll be out of the woods.”
