Leaders are more effective when they have and can convey a vision for success to their people.
It’s great to think big, but it’s also smart to have a backup plan.
People are comforted to know that “If we land this big new client, we’ll do X. If we don’t get that big contract, we still have Y and Z.”
When we do strategic and yearly planning for our company, we give ourselves a range between the optimistic and pessimistic predictions for workload, revenue, etc.
Consider developing the “best case” plan and the “in case” plan for your own career plans, business development plans, and potential expansion plans. And consider letting your people know the aspirational plans, as well as the “and we’ll be fine even if it doesn’t happen this year” plans.
