Motivation
Reward behavior that you want to continue.
Incentivize improvement. Encourage people to keep learning and growing throughout their careers.
If you have an underperformer, diagnose the issue. If they need training (or retraining), get them training. If they are demotivated, work to motivate them. If they have a conflict on the team, put them into a different work-group. If they are not in the right job, put them into a different role in the organization where they have skills and talents.
If you try every tool you have to help them improve but they are still not competent, send them to work for the competition.
