Morale
Do your people want to be here?
As leaders, we have a lot of ways to influence morale. Make sure to motivate your team members in ways that actually matter to them.
Fair compensation: Are you paying your people a fair rate for your industry and region? Do they have good benefits? Do you have a bonus structure that rewards people when they go above and beyond?
Respect and appreciation: Do your people feel valued by you and the company? Are they treated with respect? Do you consistently show your people that you trust their judgment, competencies, and skills?
Healthy team dynamics: Do your people like each other as human beings? Do they enjoy working with each other and want to make sure they don’t let everyone else down? Does everyone treat their coworkers well? Is there a good communication web among you and the other team members?
If any of the above “have room for improvement,” then make sure to proactively address the issues. Too often, ineffective managers either don’t care that there are morale problems, or they adopt a “I hope these issues resolve themselves” mindset. Be effective. Be proactive. Address issues before they escalate. And ASK your people what they would make their work experience more fulfilling.
