Mission, Vision, Values
“When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier.”
~ Roy E. Disney
Does your company have a mission statement? If so, do you know what it is without looking it up on the company website?
As leaders, we “set the sails” for our team and our organization. Of course, we want our company to prosper financially. But there’s a reason WHY we all went into the industry we did, since there are lots of ways to get a paycheck. There’s a reason WHY we chose to work at our company, rather than at another.
If you can’t explain WHY, then there’s a problem. But it’s not too late.
If you know why you do what you do, find ways to remind yourself and your team. What we do MATTERS, and it’s good for morale and productivity for people to have that in mind. Are you striving for perfection? Are you helping humanity? Are you fighting to be the best? Are you building effective teams to solve complex problems? What really matters?
If you’re still iffy on why you do what you do, sound out your people about why they chose the field and the firm. If your company does not have a mission statement (or if the official mission statement is either super-generic or ridiculously over-written), then you can workshop a mission statement specifically for your team.
Sharing a common purpose gives our work meaning, and it helps us figure out what the next steps will be.
