You don’t have to always be the tip of the spear.
Lead when your people need you. Lead when you have knowledge or expertise. Lead when you have a vision for making things better.
But also lead by not always “taking point”—sometimes, you are most effective when you defer to the person who has greater expertise, or when you empower your team member, or when you talk less and listen more when your client comes to you with concerns. This is also a model for effective leadership for your people, but it requires intentionality. Make the choice that is most likely to lead to the positive outcome… which may not be the one with you in the limelight.
