It’s the time of year when new hires—fresh out of school—enter the workforce.
As leaders, we can set the tone. Welcome your newcomers! Help them figure things out—if this is a first-job-out-of-school, then they might not know some of the workplace basics.
Consider asking a junior staffer who has been there 2-3 years to act as a “big sibling.” You might even cover the check for the two of them to go out to lunch. It’s easier to ask a “stupid question” to someone who only has 2-3 years on you than to feel like an idiot in front of the boss.
Have an open-door policy for when they want to come to you with questions or concerns, and schedule regular check-ins to make sure they are settling in well. Check in with the people who are working more directly with them, as well. Can you brainstorm ways to bring out the best in your new hires?
