Today is either “Columbus Day” or “Indigenous People’s Day” here in the US.
As leaders, acknowledging one can unintentionally be seen as a slap-in-the-face to another culture. This is a difficult needle to thread.
I hope that you are able to take the day off and relax with your family. If you can reflect on the current experience of First Nations people, you might choose to support a small business from this site: https://matadornetwork.com/read/indigenous-owned-businesses-can-support-today/ .
Honoring one culture does not mean insulting another. Consider picking up some Italian pastries (oooh—cannoli!) from your local pasticceria in honor of Enrico Fermi, Lee Iacocca, Anthony Fauci, Francis Ford Coppola, Joe DiMaggio, Mother Cabrini, Robert De Niro, Frank Sinatra, Rachel Ray, Leonardo DiCaprio, Demi Lovato, Joe Pesci, Jay Leno, Geraldine Ferraro, Antonin Scalia, Frank Zamboni, Lorenzo Del Riccio, Federico Faggin, Sam Procello, Walter Schirra, Don DeLillo, Oleg Cassini, or any of the thousands of other Italian-Americans who have contributed to the American experience.
Please celebrate the good where you find it. Please honor the challenges and hardships where they have been experienced.
