When we are growing our people’s competencies, we should show them a path to improvement.
Often, if someone on our team is doing well, we leave them alone… or load them up with more work. But if we want to bring out the best in our “rising stars,” we need to help them develop a roadmap to the professional success and fulfillment they want.
Help them prepare for the next promotion, even if that means training your replacement. When you are able to move up, you will be happy they can back-fill.
If they don’t see themselves in that role, find out what THEY want to do, and help them prepare for that role or position. Build a deep bench of competency companywide.
One of the best ways to build high retention and high morale on your team is to make sure your people see this path to THEIR version of success and fulfillment.
Show them what is possible. Show them what is available. Build their interests and their competencies.
