Managers handle the current workload. That’s valuable and necessary.
But if you are an effective leader, you will also choose to think beyond the current schedule and look strategically at future development. How do you want to grow or position your company? What can your team members do now and in the coming year to prepare for expanded roles and responsibilities?
Share your vision for that better future. Communicate why it will make things better, and how they, your team members, will benefit (individually and collectively). Discuss how you think the team can get there, and get the team members’ input on how to make your vision a reality. Build buy-in with each person before assuming they will commit to the extra effort—they need to feel it’s a good plan, if you want their best efforts. Don’t overload people who are already giving 100%—help them rebalance their workload if they need to add something, and bring on new people to share the load as the load expands.
