Goal-Setting
As leaders, we need to think beyond getting the next project out the door.
Some things we want to do will take months or years. The scope can seem overwhelming. And many people will get demotivated without noticeable progress.
Make sure you have a vision for what you are trying to accomplish. Share that vision. Set things up so that there are milestones and interim goals (quarterly, monthly, or weekly, as appropriate) and check-in for status updates. Celebrate and reward meeting these interim goals. Hold people accountable for getting these goals accomplished—don’t let them slide. Some people need periodic reminders; other people might need a continual gentle push, and there might be a few who need a (metaphorical) kick in the pants from time to time, but that’s rarer than many think. Make sure you are giving them what they need to keep motivated.
Strategic initiatives can be game-changers for success as the industry or markets change. Make sure you anticipate what needs doing and guide your team through the changes.
