I came across this on social media, and it caught my attention.
Treat your people fairly. Pay them what they are worth.
In my previous company, I had a rule for contracts—we would draw them up so that they were fair to all parties—so fair that we would feel comfortable signing on either side. When I explained this policy to professionals outside our firm, some of them were shocked. It had never occurred to them that negotiations and contracts could be win-win scenarios. In their mind, negotiations were only about maximizing your end—squeezing as much as possible out of the other party in exchange for the minimum outlay on your side.
But when you treat both sides fairly, everyone wins. Everyone gets value. You have excellent morale and retention in your firm, and repeat business and referrals from your clients.
And you can sleep well at night, knowing that you are not a selfish user of people.
