“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions.
Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” ~ Mark Twain
A great teacher, a great mentor, or a great boss can bring out the best in someone. Look at the people on your team and see not only what they can do now, but the potential that is there to be unlocked.
If you want to bring out the best in people, show them what is there within them. Offer them a path to the possible. Build up their confidence to try, and encourage them as they grow new skills. Give praise for good efforts and achieving milestones, not just for completed accomplishments. Offer correction rather than criticism, so they see how to do it better. And then empower them to take on bigger and better projects, scaling up as their experience grows.
It’s a “long game,” but bringing out the best in people is incredibly rewarding.
