I am not a fan of the phrase: “Fake it ‘til you make it.”
I understand the meaning, because success comes from confidently taking the actions needed to accomplish the job, and many people don’t feel like they are “really” in that role when they first start.
Basically, if “fake it ‘til you make it” works for you, then keep going with it. But if you don’t like the lack of authenticity, then be transparent with your intentions:
“You all know that I’m new at this role, but I know the way things work.”
“I have a vision for how I’d like this team to function, and I hope it sounds like something you want to be a part of.”
“I’m still geeking out about how amazing it is for me to be working with all of you. I’m living the dream!”
“I hope you all will help bring me up to speed with the best practices of this team. Let’s grow this branch office together.”
