Acknowledgement
Make sure to notice and appreciate the things your team members accomplish.
Thank people for doing their assignments. Thank people for stepping up and going above-and-beyond. Acknowledge good efforts and extra efforts. Reward people in fair ways—authentic words of praise, financial bonuses, promotions, public acknowledgements, trophies, etc. Keep things proportional to the accomplishment—”one does not applaud the tenor for clearing his throat.”
Some people like an in-person acknowledgement. Other people may treasure the hand-written card that says, “We couldn’t have done it without you.” Most people feel that praise should be private for the smaller stuff, but big accomplishments should have a public acknowledgement, as well.
Most people dislike “participation trophies.” Avoid them—they actually can backfire and demotivate people. But when something great has been achieved—give rewards to individuals for individual accomplishments and reward the entire group for team wins.
